Skill-Building Training for Disease Prevention & Management

The Maryland Department of Health, Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and

Control is offering a skill-building training series for Maryland evidence-

based program providers. The goal of this series is to provide a foundation of skills and competence for all leaders and managers of disease prevention and

management programs. Training opportunities are no-cost for attendees and offer certificates of completion or continuing education credit.



 

Marketing to and Engaging Vulnerable Populations in Diabetes Prevention and Management Programs

February 17, 2022 11 am - 12 pm ET Live Webinar

This webinar will review best-practices for marketing to, engaging, and retaining vulnerable populations (people who are economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, the homeless, persons with disabilities, etc.) in evidence-based programs. Participants will review various strategies and learn about existing tools available to be used in marketing and retention efforts.


Developing an Effective Marketing Plan for Evidence-Based Programs

February 24, 2022 11 am - 12 pm ET Live Webinar

This webinar will review a step-by-step approach to marketing for an evidence-based program. Participants will learn how to effectively communicate with local providers and increase provider referral of patients, how to promote their program to individuals throughout the community, and key concepts of marketing and health communication. Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be prepared to develop and implement a customized marketing plan for their program.


Understanding and Managing Bias in Evidence-Based Programs

March 24, 2022 1 pm - 3 pm ET Virtual Workshop

This training will introduce participants to how their minds work and help them understand the basis behind implicit associations. Participants will be led through exercises to recognize and understand their own biases and taught strategies to address them. The training will include information on how implicit biases contribute to health disparities in healthcare access, outcomes, and more. Beginner Motivational Interviewing

March 28 - 31, 2022 1 pm - 4 pm ET Virtual Workshop

July 11 - 12, 2022 9 pm - 4 pm ET In-Person Workshop

In this multi-day training, participants will learn various MI skills and techniques, including open-ended questioning, affirmation, reflective listening, summarizing, and more. The course is taught in a learn-see-do format, enabling participants to practice their MI skills and gain confidence in implementing those skills in their workplace. *Registration capped at 50*


Effective Communication in Evidence-Based Programs: Strategies to Address Health Literacy

April 2022 - TBD 11 am - 12 pm ET Live Webinar

*Eligible for 1 hour of Advanced Coach Training for NDPP Lifestyle Coaches

This training will provide an overview of health literacy and teach about the importance of meaningful communication when communicating health information. Participants will learn important principles and techniques for effectively communicating health information and will understand how these tools can be applied in an evidence-based program.

Supporting Mental Health in People with Diabetes

May 5, 2022 1 pm - 3 pm ET Virtual Workshop

In this workshop, attendees will learn about depression, anxiety, diabetes distress, and other mental health co-morbidities that affect people with diabetes. Attendees will learn how to screen for and assess psychosocial challenges, and how to support evidence-based program participant mental health through appropriate self-help techniques and referrals.

This multi-day advanced training is for people with a basic knowledge of motivational interviewing skills and concepts. Attendees of this training will learn how to understand clients' readiness to change and help clients move towards behavioral change with MI. The training will provide opportunities to observe and then practice various MI skills and techniques.

Working with LGBTQ+ Populations in Evidence-Based Programs

June 30, 2022 11 am - 12 pm ET Live Webinar

This webinar explores the unique health needs of LGBTQ+ people. Participants will receive an introduction to LGBTQ+ health, associated terminology, social issues that affect the health and well-being of this population, and specific evidence-based program considerations for LGBTQ+ people. Participants will learn how to create welcoming and safe environments for LGBTQ+ people and their families and understand specific clinical skills and best-practices for the care of this population.


Addressing the Social Determinants of Health in Diabetes Programs

August 4, 2022 11 am - 12 pm ET Live Webinar

This webinar will provide an overview of the social determinants of health and their impact on diabetes outcomes. Participants will gain an understanding of how a person, their social network, and their cultural and environmental conditions influence their health, particularly as it relates to diabetes. Participants will review various tools for assessing the social determinants of health and leave the webinar with improved confidence in implementing these tools within their evidence-based programs.
